Saturday, August 15, 2015

For three days in August 2015, we came together to dissect, empathize, heal, and began the process of re-imagining the story of race we live out every day.

Four workshops, in four different parts of Chicago, led by Cherry Steinwender, co-founder and Executive Director of The Center for the Healing of Racism, created a safe space where people from all backgrounds came together and dissected the concept of “race;” where they could share their unique experiences; where they could connect and become advocates for each other through the process.

On Saturday, August 15th, we looked at race through the lens of art and music, with a celebration featuring local Chicago artists, musicians and vendors. We celebrated the diversity of life and experience, and began to create a network to continue the conversation.

On Sunday, August 16th, we screened DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, followed by a talkback with writer/director, Justin Simien. He discussed his experience conceptualizing the film, navigating Hollywood, and the role and responsibility he has taken on as a storyteller of color.
